The Pilipino Star Ngayon (a part of The Philippine Star) reported that young actress Julia Barretto will soon be appearing in the upcoming ABS-CBN television series called Cofradia. The series will be a remake of an original 1953 Tagalog movie of the same name which starred Gloria Romero, Ramon Revilla, Tony Cayado, Priscilla Concepcion, Chichay, Rebecca del Rio, and Precy Ortega. The film was directed by Artemio B. Tecson.
Before being adapted into film, the story of Cofradia, Ang Mahiwagang Sinderela first appeared in the pages of Mabuhay Komiks in 1952. The comics were written by Dominador Ad Castillo and illustrated by Ben S. Maniclang. A year later, director Artemio B. Tecson adapted it into a movie. The film was produced by Sampaguita Pictures. The blurb for the film says "Don't miss this heart-touching story of a girl who was afraid to love because she was black."
Cofradia was remade again in 1973, this time with actress Gina Alajar in the title role. Gloria Romero also appeared in the remake and she played the mother of Alajar's character. Directed by Mar S. Torres, the film also starred Luis Gonzales, Rosemarie Gil, Matimtiman Cruz, Cloyd Robinson, Gina Pareno, Jojit Paredes, and Raquel Montessa.
In the television remake to be aired by ABS-CBN, Julia Barretto will play the lead role. She will be starring alongside Khalil Ramos and Julian Estrada. No air date has been announced yet.
